Is Your PIP Fair? Navigating Targets, Support, and Realistic Outcomes
Just been put on a PIP? Get independent advice on whether your Performance Improvement Plan is fair, how to handle unachievable targets, and what your options are. Move from panic to a clear plan of action.
You've been told you're being put on a PIP, or you've received the paperwork and aren't sure what it actually means for you. You might be worried about your job, confused about what's expected, or frustrated that this has come out of nowhere.
I start by understanding the situation with you: what's been said so far, whether there were any warnings before this point, and how the PIP has been framed. We look at whether the process has been handled fairly and what a reasonable PIP should actually include in terms of targets, support, and timescales.
I help you understand what the PIP period involves in practice and how to approach it in a way that protects you. That means thinking about how to engage constructively, how to document things as you go, and what to do if the targets feel unachievable or the goalposts start to move.
We also talk about the realistic outcomes of a PIP, what happens if you meet the targets, what happens if you don't, and whether there are any other options worth considering depending on your circumstances.
If the situation suggests something more serious is happening, such as the PIP being used as a managed exit rather than a genuine improvement process, I will tell you that honestly and explain explain your options and let you when it makes sense to speak to an employment solicitor.
My role is to help you understand what you're dealing with and approach the process with clarity rather than panic. If you've just been handed a PIP and don't know where to start, you can book a session with me here.
“I’m incredibly pleased with the level of care I received with Klar. When I faced being unexpectedly placed on a Performance Improvement Plan Liv walked me through the whole process, addressing any concerns I might have to ensure I was fully prepared and feeling confident ahead of my meeting. As I am neuro divergent I can be extra vulnerable when facing workplace processes as they're often not suitable for me. I was able to discuss everything with honesty and Liv advised me to take appropriate action. My outcome has been successful and I felt my employer was surprised at how well prepared I was during the meeting. I can't recommend Liv and Klar enough.”
